First Corkelast® LCS level crossing installed in the UK

During the weekend of 11 and 12 March 2017 edilon)(sedra installed its first Corkelast® LCS (Level Crossing System) in Kent, United Kingdom.

As part of the edilon)(sedra expansion and growth, we’re excited to inform you about our first Corkelast® LCS installed in the UK. The installation of the 15 meter level crossing for the client “Kent and East Sussex Railway” is a first important step in the process of becoming an approved supplier to the UK railway market. The edilon)(sedra scope of work included the engineering, the delivery of materials and equipment and the installation of the track.

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® LCS is a safe and virtually maintenance free level crossing system for heavy duty road and rail crossings (mixed traffic). The system is easy to install, has no mechanical fasteners and is completely waterproof. Furthermore it combines the powerful features of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System) with edilon)(sedra prefabricated slab tracks. The economic favourable channel design and optimally engineered thickness of the slab result in an affordable level crossing solution with a low Life Cycle Cost balance.

Trams run easier and safer in Dublin

edilon)(sedra complements the rail fastening system for the new 7.5 km Luas Cross City tram line in Dublin with the supply of high elastic rail joint sealant, Jointelast STP-25. Luas Cross City is one of the largest capital investment projects being undertaken by the Irish government at the moment and will connect the existing red and green lines to make travelling across Dublin city easier and safer.

Following the successful -trial- installation of STP-25 on Dublin’s Rosie Hackett Bridge (now known as the Marlborough bridge), this rail joint sealant was chosen again for the street running sections of the new tram line.

The 2 component elastomeric STP-25 is used to fill out the void that often is created to accommodate for a certain distance between the railhead and the streets surface. This distance prevents the, wider than the rail, tram wheel hitting asphalt pavement or other kinds of stone like street finish. Wheel (and street) damage is avoided and thus delay of expensive maintenance sequences is achieved.

Another function of STP-25 is sealing of the rail supporting system that is placed around and beneath the rail. By its excellent bonding properties and non-temperature sensitivity it provides for a durable and watertight sealant between the rail and the top surface of the street. Therewith it protects the rail fastening from corrosion or water ingress. The latter might cause electrical insulation problems that must be avoided.

STP-25 is self-levelling and not sensitive to moist. This makes installation very easy where the use of primer can be left out in most cases. Yet another advantage of this fine rail joint sealant product that can be used to improve a wide range of rail fastening systems.

The Luas Cross City tram line is scheduled to start operating before the end of 2017 at which stage the ‘missing link’ in the Luas network will be completed and a new fast and reliable modern transport system will be available.

Start collaborative project Uithof line Utrecht, The Netherlands

edilon)(sedra started the engineering, delivery and installation of a number of rail systems for the new 8 km Uithof line project in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The Uithof line is a new tram line from Utrecht Central Station to Utrecht Science Park De Uithof, which will become operational mid-2018. In close co-operation with the Uithof Line project partners BAM and Arcadis, different types of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® Embedded Rail Systems are installed. Some of which are executed with concrete or steel channels, or with concrete slabs. Both top-down and bottom-up installation methods are applied.

The edilon)(sedra scope of work includes the engineering, the delivery of materials and equipment and the installation of 7 kms of balastless single track. This large tram project shows once again the great trust that edilon)(sedra – with its technologically leading embedded rail system technology – enjoys in the railway industry. It further confirms the satisfaction of our customers and partners with our safe and durable rail systems and our performance.

Bucharest Metro line 5

For the new 15 km long Bucharest Metro Line 5 edilon)(sedra supplies its Corkelast® EBS-MS block system for 49E1 rail. The contract has been concluded with Astaldi/FCC/UTI JV.

Metrorex (the Bucharest Metro Authority) has used a bi-block sleeper system since the early 80’s, with growing problems with deflection, electrical insulation and wear & tear of the booted trays. Maintenance cost are high, and due to the short possession times it often interferes the transport service.

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® EBS-MS combines a Medium Stiffness and watertight system with low maintenance. The crossings and switches are carried by EBS blocks that were especially designed to accommodate the traffic. Guiderail has been integrated into special EBS blocks to conform with the clients demands.

In specific areas of the track, e.g. near Theatre and University, an additional edilon)(sedra Trackelast® STM RPU/Blue slab track mat will be applied to isolate vibrations in the lower frequencies range. A thorough study on noise and vibration effects has been performed by the German company I.B.U. under supervision of Mr. Udo Lenz.

Presently the blocks are transported into the tunnel and laid out for installation of the track superstructure.

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS for Swiss bridge project “Hardbrücke” in Zurich

We are pleased to inform you Tiefbauamt der Stadt Zürich (TAZ) has decided to take advantage of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS for 2 new tram tracks: 1030 m on the existing Hardbrücke in Zurich, Switzerland. The Hardbrücke project has started in July of this year and is planned to be completed in October 2017.

Unique and cost-effective level crossing solution in The Netherlands

edilon)(sedra recently installed a unique level crossing solution in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Constructing the level crossing in this method resulted in significant savings for the contractors, because the installation no longer required the cutting and welding of rails.

The project included the extension of an existing level crossing by a 3 m LCS-L slab. Normally such a slab is placed directly on the split. In this case the slab is stabilized by means of grouting. Injection holes were mounted in the slab, as well as adjustment options in order to vertically adjust the slab by means of hydraulic jacks.

In addition, the use of stepwise displacement of the LCS-L slab, it was passed under the rails and positioned. Thereafter, edilon)(sedra Corkelast® elastomer was poured to embed the rails and give them their world famous continuous support.

In brief: a unique, quick and cost-effective application of our LCS-L system.

Corkelast® ERS for reduction of rail wear in curved tracks

edilon)(sedra has recently been asked for a rail replacement job in the historical city centre of Gent in Belgium. The old and rigid filler block system caused heavy rail wear in the curved part of the track.

Therefore the old track is replaced by the elastic and durable rail system edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System). This homogeneous and robust rail fastening over the full length of the curved track, minimizes future rail wear and contributes to a favourable LCC-balance. The system offers track gauge stability especially in curved track without the use of gauge bars. Furthermore it offers optimal reduction of noise & vibration, which is an important aspect for this historical and densely populated part of the city.
