edilon)(sedra investigates sustainable biobased polymers for railway systems

edilon)(sedra, in cooperation with Wageningen UR and Croda, is working on the development of next generation polymers for elastic rail fastening systems. The goal of the project is to develop environmentally-friendly biobased polymers which cure into an elastic rubber-like compound within a limited time.

These biobased polymers can be applied as elastic sound and vibration-reducing materials. The project team is studying various chemical research routes. The final material should have an optimal worksite processability. In addition it should meet specific mechanical and adhesion requirements.

BPM programme
The project is part of the large-scale research programme Biobased Performance Materials (BPM). The goal of the BPM programme is to develop high-quality materials based on biomass; materials that are increasingly applied in practice. The research focuses on two types of polymer materials: polymers produced by plants and polymers from biobased building blocks produced via biotechnology or chemical catalysis. The BPM programme is partly financed by the Top Sector Chemistry and is led by Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research.

MiddleEastRail exhibition: Embedded Block System identified as compliant system for heavy seasonal rainfall

edilon)(sedra participated in the 2016 MiddleEastRail exhibition for the third year running. We were happy to recognise that the exhibition has developed in to a truly international event.

The exhibition ran for two full days, most of the time the stand was very busy.  There were clients, technical advisors, principles and decision makers, all who were keenly interested in our embedded rail technology, especially the edilon)(sedra Corkelast® Embedded Block System (EBS).

EBS was identified as a compliant system to track works that were exposed to the heavy seasonal rainfall.  It was identified that rainfall in the Middle East region, though very infrequent, often exceeds more than 250mm in a day.  When this happens and the track form is not suitably designed to accommodate the rainfall, then the track becomes unusable.

Enquires for the edilon)(sedra track systems came from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar and the UAE.  edilon)(sedra participation in the 2016 Middle East Rail exhibition was a success, and we look forward to meeting our old friends as well as our new ones during this promising 2016.

14.000 units of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® EBS Embedded Blocks for Education City, Qatar

edilon)(sedra has played a pivotal role in the supply of more than 14.000 units of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® EBS Embedded Blocks for Education City people mover in Qatar. The units are installed in the summer of 2015 in the Depot, elevated track and shortly within the tunnel.

Education City people mover, is an 11.5 km catenary-free tramway which is being built to serve the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development’s education and research campus west of Doha. Awarded in July 2012 to the Siemens Tram Consortium of Siemens AG, Siemens WLL Qatar and Habtoor Leighton Group.

Mark Fowler, Sales Manager Middle East at edilon)(sedra: “The decision to use the Corkelast® EBS units was made because of its high resistance to stray currents, an absolute requirement stipulated by Siemens Tram Consortium. In addition edilon)(sedra were able to mobilise their supply and delivery within record time, hence providing continuity of productivity within the track construction.”

Innovative strategy for extension railway line Toyama, Japan

Ten years after edilon)(sedra installed 1.163 meter of Corkelast® USTS (Urban Slab Track System) in Toyama Japan, the city has a very innovative strategy to further extend this successful tram system.

In the past the city centre of Toyama was practically divided in half by a railway line, and new tram operations started up in the part which still had no tram. To bring people living in the suburbs into the city, a disused railway line was refurbished for tram operation and laid into the city centre (to the railway station). This new tram line (Seaport Line) for which the slab track system was installed by edilon)(sedra, is operated by Toyama Light Rail Co. Ltd., opened in 2006.

Nowadays there are two standalone systems which are only separated by the railway lines. With the extension of the railway line in Toyama for the Shinkansen and Toyama railway station, the idea emerged of connecting the two tram systems with a new underpass which has yet to be built. It is planned to connect the existing terminus of each system at the railway station in 2020. The vision would then become reality, and Toyama would have one continuous high-performance tram system.

In the Seaport Line project we were joined by Hanning & Kahl  as partner from the European Transportation Technology Group (TTG). Together, we demonstrated that European technology offers ideal solutions for safe, modern, long-lasting and thus economically-efficient tram systems.

Dex®-R 2K: durable rail track fixation of Liefkenshoektunnel

In the first half of December Belgian track operator Infrabel officially inaugurated the Liefkenshoek railway tunnel.

The railway tunnel, which is part of a 16.2 km railway track,  establishes an additional link between the two banks of the Scheldt estuary in the Port of Antwerp, currently Europe’s second-largest port. To ensure a durable tunnel rail track construction edilon)(sedra delivered high-quality adhesive edilon)(sedra Dex®-R 2K and edilon)(sedra DFS (Direct Fastening System) anchor sets.

The railway line accommodates an increase in container traffic and free up capacity on the suburban rail lines to decongest the road network. Earlier Belgian rail infra projects for which Infrabel and edilon)(sedra cooperated are the Schumann tunnel in Brussels, Central Station of Antwerp, and Diabolo tunnel in Zaventem.

edilon)(sedra strengthens business contacts at AusRail

edilon)(sedra looks back on a great exhibition AusRail 2014 that took place on the 11th and 12th of November in Perth, Australia. The exhibition gave us a good opportunity to strengthen existing business contacts in the region of Australia, New Zealand and the surrounding Southeast Asian countries.

Delegates and visitors showed plenty of interest in our company’s latest rail track innovations. A special point of interest was edilon)(sedra ERS (Embedded Rail System), one of the showpieces of our stand. This highly durable embedded rail system for trains, trams and metros has radically changed the concept of how rails can be supported. ERS also provides extremely low construction height and is a special feature for refurbishment of existing tunnels. edilon)(sedra ERS is widely used for level crossings, bridges, tunnels, stations, depots, industrial and in street tracks.

For more info about edilon)(sedra ERS please contact us or download one of our ERS showcases Metroport New Zealand and Jimblebar Newman Australia. We are looking forward to the next edition of AusRail which will take place in November 2015 in Melbourne.
