For the new 15 km long Bucharest Metro Line 5 edilon)(sedra supplies its Corkelast® EBS-MS block system for 49E1 rail. The contract has been concluded with Astaldi/FCC/UTI JV.

Metrorex (the Bucharest Metro Authority) has used a bi-block sleeper system since the early 80’s, with growing problems with deflection, electrical insulation and wear & tear of the booted trays. Maintenance cost are high, and due to the short possession times it often interferes the transport service.

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® EBS-MS combines a Medium Stiffness and watertight system with low maintenance. The crossings and switches are carried by EBS blocks that were especially designed to accommodate the traffic. Guiderail has been integrated into special EBS blocks to conform with the clients demands.

In specific areas of the track, e.g. near Theatre and University, an additional edilon)(sedra Trackelast® STM RPU/Blue slab track mat will be applied to isolate vibrations in the lower frequencies range. A thorough study on noise and vibration effects has been performed by the German company I.B.U. under supervision of Mr. Udo Lenz.

Presently the blocks are transported into the tunnel and laid out for installation of the track superstructure.



Corkelast® ERS for Swiss bridge project “Hardbrücke” in Zurich

We are pleased to inform you Tiefbauamt der Stadt Zürich (TAZ) has decided to take advantage of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS for 2 new tram tracks: 1030 m on the existing Hardbrücke in Zurich, Switzerland. The Hardbrücke project has started in July of this year and is planned to be completed in October 2017.

Unique and cost-effective level crossing solution in The Netherlands

edilon)(sedra recently installed a unique level crossing solution in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Constructing the level crossing in this method resulted in significant savings for the contractors, because the installation no longer required the cutting and welding of rails.

The project included the extension of an existing level crossing by a 3 m LCS-L slab. Normally such a slab is placed directly on the split. In this case the slab is stabilized by means of grouting. Injection holes were mounted in the slab, as well as adjustment options in order to vertically adjust the slab by means of hydraulic jacks.

In addition, the use of stepwise displacement of the LCS-L slab, it was passed under the rails and positioned. Thereafter, edilon)(sedra Corkelast® elastomer was poured to embed the rails and give them their world famous continuous support.

In brief: a unique, quick and cost-effective application of our LCS-L system.

Corkelast® ERS for reduction of rail wear in curved tracks

edilon)(sedra has recently been asked for a rail replacement job in the historical city centre of Gent in Belgium. The old and rigid filler block system caused heavy rail wear in the curved part of the track.

Therefore the old track is replaced by the elastic and durable rail system edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System).This homogeneous and robust rail fastening over the full length of the curved track, minimizes future rail wear and contributes to a favourable LCC-balance. The system offers track gauge stability especially in curved track without the use of gauge bars. Furthermore it offers optimal reduction of noise & vibration, which is an important aspect for this historical and densely populated part of the city.


No more costly inspections and maintenance for level crossings on main line Paris-Lille

edilon)(sedra successfully installed 4 maintenance-free level crossings on the main line Paris-Lille, in Breteuil, France.

The old level crossings required weekly inspection, frequent maintenance and had to be renewed every 3 years. In a short weekend shift the 4 new level crossings were installed, applying edilon)(sedra Corkelast® LCS (Level Crossing System).

Prefabricated slabs were mounted on a solid layer of subsoil and geo-textile. Thereafter a bottom-up rail installation commenced with shims for alignment. The edilon)(sedra Corkelast® elastomer was poured to embed the rails and give them their world famous continuous support.

Since the renewal there is no requirement for frequent and costly inspection visits. The train speed has been increased to 160 km/h in the first stage, and the accessibility and safety are significantly improved.

Corkelast LCS Level Crossing System Paris-Lille (Breteuil, France)

State-of-the-art Ankara High Speed Station constructed with Corkelast® ERS

We are pleased to inform you that TCDD Turkish State Railway Authorities have decided to take advantage of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System) for their new iconic railway station in Ankara, Turkey. The high speed track construction will be completed by end of May 2016.

TCDD’s main technical reason for selecting ERS is the fact of being 100% in conformity with the CEN 13481-5. Respective ERS-documentation such as reference letters from various railway authorities, complete CEN-test reports, etc. had been provided confirming the outstanding track record and unrestricted applica­bility.

As the station building also has a shopping mall, 5 star hotel, con­ference center, etc. a noise & vibration study had been conduc­ted in collaboration with Prof. Mehmet Çalışkan / METU, Ankara in order to verify the behavior of our ERS with Trackelast® STM/RPU in accordance to the technical requirements.

14.000 units of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® EBS Embedded Blocks for Education City, Qatar

edilon)(sedra has played a pivotal role in the supply of more than 14.000 units of edilon)(sedra Corkelast® EBS Embedded Blocks for Education City people mover in Qatar. The units are installed in the summer of 2015 in the Depot, elevated track and shortly within the tunnel.

Education City people mover, is an 11.5 km catenary-free tramway which is being built to serve the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development’s education and research campus west of Doha. Awarded in July 2012 to the Siemens Tram Consortium of Siemens AG, Siemens WLL Qatar and Habtoor Leighton Group.

Innovative strategy for extension railway line Toyama, Japan

Ten years after edilon)(sedra installed 1.163 meter of Corkelast® USTS (Urban Slab Track System) in Toyama Japan, the city has a very innovative strategy to further extend this successful tram system.

In the past the city centre of Toyama was practically divided in half by a railway line, and new tram operations started up in the part which still had no tram. To bring people living in the suburbs into the city, a disused railway line was refurbished for tram operation and laid into the city centre (to the railway station). This new tram line (Seaport Line) for which the slab track system was installed by edilon)(sedra, is operated by Toyama Light Rail Co. Ltd., opened in 2006.

Nowadays there are two standalone systems which are only separated by the railway lines. With the extension of the railway line in Toyama for the Shinkansen and Toyama railway station, the idea emerged of connecting the two tram systems with a new underpass which has yet to be built. It is planned to connect the existing terminus of each system at the railway station in 2020. The vision would then become reality, and Toyama would have one continuous high-performance tram system.

In the Seaport Line project we were joined by Hanning & Kahl  as partner from the European Transportation Technology Group (TTG). Together, we demonstrated that European technology offers ideal solutions for safe, modern, long-lasting and thus economically-efficient tram systems.

Solutions in optimal track construction height for St. Gallen station, Switzerland

edilon)(sedra received its first contract from Appenzeller Bahn to install Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System) for part of the tramtrain track in front of St. Gallen station, Switzerland.

The Trogener Bahn as operator of the tramtrain in the region of St. Gallen had problems with the construction height in front of the railway station, because of an existing underground car park. They took the decision to install Corkelast® ERS in this section because this system offers optimal construction height.

Another important factor why Appenzeller Bahn chose for Corkelast® ERS was the additional reduction of vibration in this historical and crowded station area.
