In September 2024, our edilon)(sedra Gantry Crane Rail Services team successfully completed the first flagship SARR (Semi-Automatic Rail Repair) project as a proof of concept for the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Malaysia. Following the successful completion of the first project we will have the opportunity to bid for the full block of rail repair work on a further 35 RTG cranes. SARR is a unique crane rail repair service designed specifically for marine and port infrastructure. It significantly reduces time and costs for Ship-to-Shore Container Cranes (SSQC)—delivering repairs up to five times faster than traditional Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding methods.

No time to stand still at one of the world’s largest container ports
Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) ranks as the 15th busiest container port globally and holds fifth place in operational efficiency. Strategically positioned at a key intersection of east–west shipping routes, it offers a diversion time of just 45 minutes and is located in a sheltered bay with no tidal restrictions.
Modern ports face increasing challenges in replacing or repairing worn rails and support structures—often in confined spaces and at height. These tasks are traditionally labour-intensive and time-consuming.
Our client recognises our deep understanding of local requirements and our proven expertise in global project management. SARR is a modular, easy-to-deploy system that enables significantly faster repairs while ensuring consistently high-quality rail head restoration and resurfacing. Most importantly, it drastically reduces crane downtime and encourages repair over replacement—a sustainable solution aligned with the customer’s long-term operational and environmental goals.

Sky Grinder – A bespoke precision grinding solution
One of the key components of SARR is our precision grinding solution. Our battery-powered Sky Grinder enables controlled grinding with exceptional accuracy—achieving tolerances of 0 mm (+/–) over 200 mm, and 0.5 mm over 1000 mm—for excavation, surface preparation, and final profile finishing at height.
The Sky Grinder initiates the semi-automated welding process, pre-heats the rails using a high-performance super pre-heater, and performs non-destructive testing (NDT) using liquid penetrant testing (LPT) to confirm that any defects have been fully removed.
This patented machine delivers advanced automation tailored to the unique challenges of crane rail maintenance at height. When combined with our full suite of SARR tools and services, it represents a significant advancement in the maintenance of Ship-to-Shore (STS) and Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes.
The challenge
Gantry crane rail maintenance at dizzying heights, in extreme weather, at a port that never sleeps.
