Strong stray current isolation performance new LRT line

Stray current is a major consideration when constructing Light Rail projects. Future corrosion of the rails and metallic assets in the ground (gas mains, earth stakes, cables, foundations, etc.) should be prevented by any means necessary.

For project Canberra light rail, our company was able to play an important role in this aspect. In 2017, 12 km of highly insulating edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System) was installed as part of a brand new Light Rail network for Transport Canberra.

Two years after the installation, the Transport Canberra Stray Current working group carried out field tests to measure the electrical insulation values under different climatologic circumstances. Formally reported measurements show the embedded rail system continues to prove an excellent seasonal trend. Rail-to-earth resistance results in the wet surpass 20 ohm·km, while dry conditions show phenomenal readings in the order of 60 to 80 ohm·km!

The challenge

Elimination of stray currents >> prevention of corrosion of rails and metallic assets in ground.

The solution

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System).

The result

Proven excellent electrical insulation values in practice.

Prefabricated track solution for quick installation of level crossings

Each level crossing project is different and takes a different approach. edilon)(sedra are closely involved, from the design to the installation phase.Take, for example, our recent level crossing replacement project in Wellington, New Zealand.

A series of Heavy Rail crossings were replaced by our Corkelast® LCS (Level Crossing System). It all started with mapping out the specific requirements and needs of customer KiwiRail. Our Application Engineering department was closely involved in this. They advised on the dimensions of the level crossing and the integration with the surrounding infrastructure, in order to supply the best possible level crossing design.

An important project requirement was the short replacement time. The crossing is part of a busy junction, so a short possession time was crucial. In order to further speed up the construction period, a prefabricated track solution was applied. With this solution, the rail is pre-installed in the slab by means of our Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System).

In addition, we took care of the supply of materials and construction by offering track layout plans, local production and storage facilities, logistical planning services and supervision during construction. All, of course, in close cooperation with our local project partners.

The challenge

Replacement of a series of level crossings, as part of a busy junction.

The solution

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® LCS (Level Crossing System).

The result

Replacement of the crossings in a very short time span, with minimal disruption to the local road traffic.

Track renovation of three heavy duty railway bridges

The renovation project of the three Southern Connection Railway bridges crossing the Danube, can justifiably be called a technical masterpiece. The degraded condition of the 2 existing steel bridge structures required reconstruction of the structure and a new, third railway bridge had to be installed.

The reconstruction of the bridges had to be carried out in such a way that two-way rail traffic was maintained during the reconstruction. During the reconstruction, the first structure was built and the second existing structure was disassembled and rebuilt. After that the third existing structure was disassembled and rebuilt.

The mounting of the track was executed with edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS, mainly because of almost all bridges over the Danube river are fastened with ERS and have proven to be highly durable and virtually maintenance-free. The existing bridges and the new bridges are operated by MÁV Zrt (Hungarian Railway Authority).

The bridges, which are situated on the line between the Eastern Railway Station and Hegyeshalom, are three of the busiest railway connections, crossing the river Danube. The aim of this project is to provide a modern transport alternative in southern Budapest for the residents of the conurbation.

The challenge

The reconstruction of the bridges in such a way that two-way rail traffic was maintained during the reconstruction.

The solution

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System).

The result

Three new, highly sustainable railway bridges.
