“Cool” tram extension to the Sonnwendviertel district

Between February and December 2019, 2550 meter of new track was built in the urban expansion area Sonnwendviertel in Vienna, including two new stops, making use of a track solution from edilon)(sedra, known as the Sound Damping System (SDS). The 1,1 km extension of Line D not only provides a faster connection to the U1 underground line, it also provides “cooling”. The specifically chosen green track is a significant cooling measure of the city to actively protect the climate.

Sustainable tram

The double track is located next to a park in an area densely built with houses, roads and pavements. The 43 cm thick vegetation layer, mainly consisting of native grasses and herbs, ensures that over 70 percent of the rainwater is stored. This has a very positive effect on the urban water and temperature balance.

The new generation of stray current insulation

The universal track insulation system edilon)(sedra Editack Spray – a solvent-free, thick-layered polyurethane resin liquid plastic – was also used specifically for the 1680 m of green track. The two-component material is sprayed on by machine and forms a viscoplastic and mechanically resistant layer. With a layer thickness of 1 mm, achievable drainage coatings of around 0.1 μS/km per track are possible. This value is therefore significantly lower than the permissible drainage layer of G’= 2.5 S/km per track required by the standard, which was also confirmed by on-site measurements.

Our customer “Wiener Linien” is once again convinced by a high-quality edilon)(sedra solution and the good cooperation with all parties involved. Vienna will continue to expand its public transport and now knows where to find cool track extensions.

The challenge

To design a sustainable tramway, economically as well as ecologically sound and seamlessly integrated into the existing environment. An important long-term aspect here is to best protect the existing infrastructure underground from stray currents.

The solution

edilon)(sedra Sound Damping System (SDS) combined with the unique Editack Spray.

The result

A high-performance track system with durable insulation that provides optimal protection against stray currents while also improving the water and temperature balance in the city… how “cool” is that?!

Amazing retractable pitch at Bernabéu stadium, rolls smoothly over Corkelast® ERS

One of the world’s leading football clubs, Real Madrid, has started playing football at the refurbished Santiago Bernabéu stadium. The stadium has undergone a major refurbishment, one of the highlights of which is the impressive new pitch removal system. We are extremely proud to have contributed to this engineering masterpiece by providing our Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System) to support the wheels of the retractable pitch panels.

Technical masterpice

12 single-track units were installed parallel to each other, with the A75 rail embedded in a concrete slab using the edilon)(sedra Corkelast® elastomer. The top of the rail is at exactly the same level as the slab.

Prefabricated track solution for quick installation of level crossings

Each level crossing project is different and takes a different approach. edilon)(sedra are closely involved, from the design to the installation phase.Take, for example, our recent level crossing replacement project in Wellington, New Zealand.

A series of Heavy Rail crossings were replaced by our Corkelast® LCS (Level Crossing System). It all started with mapping out the specific requirements and needs of customer KiwiRail. Our Application Engineering department was closely involved in this. They advised on the dimensions of the level crossing and the integration with the surrounding infrastructure, in order to supply the best possible level crossing design.

An important project requirement was the short replacement time. The crossing is part of a busy junction, so a short possession time was crucial. In order to further speed up the construction period, a prefabricated track solution was applied. With this solution, the rail is pre-installed in the slab by means of our Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System).

In addition, we took care of the supply of materials and construction by offering track layout plans, local production and storage facilities, logistical planning services and supervision during construction. All, of course, in close cooperation with our local project partners.

The challenge

Replacement of a series of level crossings, as part of a busy junction.

The solution

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® LCS (Level Crossing System).

The result

Replacement of the crossings in a very short time span, with minimal disruption to the local road traffic.

Strong stray current isolation performance new LRT line

Stray current is a major consideration when constructing Light Rail projects. Future corrosion of the rails and metallic assets in the ground (gas mains, earth stakes, cables, foundations, etc.) should be prevented by any means necessary.

For project Canberra light rail, our company was able to play an important role in this aspect. In 2017, 12 km of highly insulating edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System) was installed as part of a brand new Light Rail network for Transport Canberra.

Two years after the installation, the Transport Canberra Stray Current working group carried out field tests to measure the electrical insulation values under different climatologic circumstances. Formally reported measurements show the embedded rail system continues to prove an excellent seasonal trend. Rail-to-earth resistance results in the wet surpass 20 ohm·km, while dry conditions show phenomenal readings in the order of 60 to 80 ohm·km!

The challenge

Elimination of stray currents >> prevention of corrosion of rails and metallic assets in ground.

The solution

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System).

The result

Proven excellent electrical insulation values in practice.

Track renovation of three heavy duty railway bridges

The renovation project of the three Southern Connection Railway bridges crossing the Danube, can justifiably be called a technical masterpiece. The degraded condition of the 2 existing steel bridge structures required reconstruction of the structure and a new, third railway bridge had to be installed.

The reconstruction of the bridges had to be carried out in such a way that two-way rail traffic was maintained during the reconstruction. During the reconstruction, the first structure was built and the second existing structure was disassembled and rebuilt. After that the third existing structure was disassembled and rebuilt.

The mounting of the track was executed with edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS, mainly because of almost all bridges over the Danube river are fastened with ERS and have proven to be highly durable and virtually maintenance-free. The existing bridges and the new bridges are operated by MÁV Zrt (Hungarian Railway Authority).

The bridges, which are situated on the line between the Eastern Railway Station and Hegyeshalom, are three of the busiest railway connections, crossing the river Danube. The aim of this project is to provide a modern transport alternative in southern Budapest for the residents of the conurbation.

The challenge

The reconstruction of the bridges in such a way that two-way rail traffic was maintained during the reconstruction.

The solution

edilon)(sedra Corkelast® ERS (Embedded Rail System).

The result

Three new, highly sustainable railway bridges.
